I’m at a loss about what to do with my older brother. We grew up close, but he’s always struggled with self-control and, lately, the problem has gotten out of hand—he’s fallen deep into online gambling. Two months ago, our mom called me in tears after she found out he’d borrowed money from her, then lied about why he needed it. When I confronted him, he brushed me off and said he had it under control. But just last week, his wife called, frantic—there was a large amount missing from their joint account, and she suspected where it went. Now the rest of the family is looking to me to somehow stage an intervention because, as the 'responsible one,' I’m apparently the only person he might listen to. The thought of confronting him again fills me with dread—he’s stubborn and proud, and I’m terrified he’ll cut me off for good. But if I do nothing and he spirals further, I’ll be living with the guilt. Meanwhile, his wife is at her breaking point, mom barely sleeps, and all eyes are still on me to fix it. I love my brother dearly, but I’m exhausted by always being put in the middle. Do I risk our bond trying to save him, or respect his independence—no matter the consequences? What would YOU do?
