I found out three weeks ago that my father has been living a double life for at least eight years. I always thought his business trips were normal, but then I accidentally saw a series of texts pop up on his tablet, addressed to a boy who called him 'Dad.' After digging through enough digital evidence to make me sick, I realized my father has a second family in another city—a woman he calls his wife and a son who’s a few years younger than me. No one in my family has a clue. I confronted my dad, shaking, and watched him crumble and beg for time, beg me not to ruin everything. I haven’t told anyone else. Now, every dinner and family gathering is agony. My mother talks about how lucky we are. My little brother plans a birthday trip with our father, who is home less and less. If I tell the truth, I could break my mother’s heart and blow up both families' worlds. But if I stay silent, I’m complicit in a gigantic lie, gnawing at me every day. Part of me wants to go straight to my mother. Another part wonders if this is even mine to tell. And sometimes I think about writing an anonymous letter so I don’t have to see their faces when the news drops. I feel like I’m suffocating. What would YOU do?
