I’m the oldest child in my family, and my brother has always been the golden one—smart, funny, everyone’s favorite. But over the last year, after a bad breakup and job loss, he’s spiraled—drinking nonstop, ignoring bills, and getting evicted from three apartments. Our parents are frantic. Last week, they begged me to talk sense into him and convince him to go to rehab. I know he listens to me more than anyone, and I can usually get through, but lately, even I can’t break through his denial. I’m scared if I intervene hard, I’ll destroy what little trust we have left. But if I do nothing, he could overdose or end up homeless. The family is watching me—waiting for me to step up, because he always “comes around” when I show up. But I’m exhausted. My own job is stressful, my relationship shaky from all this chaos, and I feel manipulative pushing him against his will. Part of me thinks maybe he needs to truly hit rock bottom to want help. Yet, picturing that makes me sick with guilt. I hate feeling like everyone’s hope depends on me, but I also know what’s at stake. If I push too much, will he cut us all off? If I do nothing, am I just waiting for disaster? What would YOU do?
