I’m the oldest of three, and my brother has always been the golden child—or at least, everyone wanted him to be. For the last two years, he’s been spinning out: he lost his job after skipping work too many times, started couch-surfing, and every time we talk he’s chasing some new scheme or blaming someone else. I’ve watched all this from a distance, because for most of my adult life I’ve been the fixer in our family, and honestly, I reached my breaking point after years of picking up pieces. Now my mother is constantly calling me in tears, worried my brother’s going to end up homeless or worse, and asking me to step in, just like always. It’s not that I don’t care—I love my brother. But the last few times I tried to help, he cut me off, got angry, said I was judging him. My own partner is worried about the stress it’s causing me, especially since I’m juggling a demanding job and our two kids. Part of me feels like if I don’t do something, he really might fall through the cracks for good and I’ll regret not trying one last time. Another part of me resents being drafted—again—into fixing his life when he keeps rejecting me. But my family keeps saying if anyone can get through to him, it’s me. Sometimes I lie awake wondering if I’m abandoning him, or if I’m finally just stepping back from being everyone’s crisis hotline. What would YOU do?
