Should I Tell My Siblings About Dad’s Hidden Family?

Category: family • Theme: Loyalty to Parent vs Honesty with Siblings

I recently found out something that has shaken every belief I had about my family. While organizing some old paperwork after my father's minor stroke, I came across a stack of letters buried at the back of his closet. They were written by a woman who, from the way she wrote, had a long, emotionally intimate relationship with my father—and the photos included showed two children who look unmistakably like him. From the dates and details, I realized this secret family existed alongside mine for at least fifteen years. My mother passed away a few years ago and never mentioned this. My siblings are close to me; we rely on each other after losing our mom, and I know this would devastate them. Yet part of me feels sick keeping this to myself, living a lie every time we talk about family memories or praise our dad. But he’s still vulnerable after his stroke, and if I confront him—or, even worse, disclose it to everyone—I could destroy whatever peace our family has left. Should I honor what my father wanted to keep hidden and protect my siblings' image of him, or do they deserve to know the truth, no matter how painful? I honestly don’t know how to carry this secret on my own. What would YOU do?
