Should I Tell My Sister Her Wife Wants to Leave?

Category: family • Theme: Protecting My Sister vs Honoring a Confidence

I found myself unexpectedly stuck in the middle of my sister’s marriage. Last weekend, while my sister was at work, her wife and I sat together after a family dinner, just washing up. Out of nowhere, her wife began to cry. She told me she’d been feeling lost and drifting from my sister for months. She swore she wasn’t cheating, but confessed she was already seriously considering separation. She begged me not to say anything to my sister, that she needed time to figure things out, and wanted to talk to my sister herself ‘when the time is right.’ But I can’t shake this from my mind. My sister has been talking about planning a big trip for their anniversary, even floating the idea of trying for a baby. She’s happy, finally, after a few rough years. I worry she’s living in a fantasy world and has no idea what’s coming. I hate the idea of betraying my sister’s trust by keeping her in the dark. But I also feel like I’d be breaking my sister-in-law’s trust if I said anything yet. If I tell my sister now, I might shatter her—maybe even cause the breakup to happen sooner, or mess up any chance for them to talk honestly. But if I keep quiet, I’m just waiting for disaster, and she might think I chose someone else’s secrets over hers if she finds out I knew. I’m stuck: do I warn my sister, betray her wife’s confidence, or just try to support both quietly? What would YOU do?
