I recently discovered something that’s tearing me up inside. My uncle, who helped raise me after my dad passed, has been quietly battling a serious illness. Our family thought he was following the doctor’s treatment plan, but I saw medication bottles hidden in his garage—untouched. I confronted him, and he finally broke down. He told me he’s refusing the treatment because the side effects make him feel awful and he doesn’t want his last months to be miserable. He made me swear not to tell the rest of the family, especially my aunt and cousin, who are already overwhelmed. He says all he wants is to spend time with them, make good memories, and go on his own terms. I feel awful keeping this secret.
