I recently found out something that has been eating away at me. My mom has had Type 2 diabetes for years, and while she’s always put on a brave face in front of my dad and our extended family, I didn’t realize things were getting so bad. Last week, while visiting her unexpectedly, I noticed unused insulin pens piling up in her bathroom drawer. When I gently brought it up, she broke down in tears and admitted she’d quietly stopped taking her medication months ago because the side effects were making her miserable. She begged me not to tell anyone, especially my dad, who would “make a mountain out of it.” She swore she’d try a more natural approach, and just wanted me to respect her decision, even if I disagreed. But I’m terrified. She’s already fainted once this month and her blood sugar logs are all over. My dad, siblings, and her doctor think she’s compliant with her treatment, and everyone keeps talking about future family trips as if nothing's wrong. If I break her trust and tell the family or her doctor, she’ll feel so betrayed—and I do get why she hates the meds. But if I keep this to myself and something serious happens, I’ll never forgive myself. I’ve tried reasoning with her, but she’s adamant. Every morning I wake up afraid I’ll get a phone call with terrible news. I feel stuck between protecting her wishes and possibly saving her life. What would YOU do?
