Do I Force My Uncle to Face His Cancer?

Category: health • Theme: Respecting Autonomy vs Protecting Life

I recently discovered, totally by accident, that my uncle—who practically raised me—has been secretly refusing the chemotherapy his doctors prescribed for his aggressive cancer. I only found out because I went to his house to bring him groceries and overheard him on the phone canceling an appointment at the hospital. When I confronted him, he swore me to secrecy, explaining that the treatment made him feel worse than the illness and that he wants to spend whatever time he has left feeling as normal as possible. But the rest of our tight-knit family, including his wife and my mother, have no idea. They just think he’s been unusually lucky with side effects. I feel torn because if I tell them, I know they’ll pressure him to continue treatment—or maybe even try to force him. But keeping his secret means everyone is living a lie and missing the chance, at least, to have an honest goodbye if things turn for the worse. Every day I see how exhausted he looks, but he also seems more himself lately, baking, working in the garden, seeing old friends. I love him too much to let him go quietly, but I don’t want to steal his last ounce of dignity, either. What would YOU do?
