I’ve always been the "problem solver" in my family, but now I feel utterly helpless. My dad was diagnosed with a chronic illness a few years ago, and the last six months have been excruciating for him. He’s been through rounds of aggressive treatments, endless doctor visits, and dealt with side effects that strip away his dignity. Last week, after a particularly hard hospital stay, he quietly told me he wants to stop all treatment and just enjoy whatever good days he has left. My mom and one sibling are devastated and furious. They insist we have to convince him to keep fighting—that giving up is a betrayal of the family’s hope and love. But I can see how tired he is. Every time I visit, he looks at me with this pleading sadness, like he’s trapped in a battle he never chose. I’m torn between my family’s desperate hope and my dad’s right to decide. Some days I’m tempted to urge him to keep trying, afraid I’ll later regret not having fought for more time. Other days, I feel honoring his wish is the last kindness I can offer, even if the thought of losing him breaks me. My family is pressuring me to take their side and fight the doctors if needed. But if I do that, am I really helping? Or just forcing him to suffer more for our sake? I’ve never felt so split. What would YOU do?
