I work part-time at a small medical office where my job is usually just paperwork and answering phones. A few days ago, I was asked to file some records, and I accidentally saw my close friend's medical chart. I know I shouldn't have looked, but I saw a diagnosis that completely shocked me—something chronic and serious that she’s never mentioned. Since then, I've been replaying every conversation, wondering if she's been hiding her illness or just doesn't trust me enough to share it. My friend is always upbeat and seems healthy, but maybe that's just a mask. I feel guilty for knowing, but also worried about her. What if she needs support? Am I supposed to act like I don’t know? Should I encourage her to talk about her health without saying why? I can’t shake the feeling that she’s alone with this and maybe scared, but I also know I could get in trouble for discussing confidential information from work. It’s eating me up inside, and every time we hang out I feel awkward, like I’m keeping her secret without her knowing. What would YOU do?
