I work at the front desk in a small medical clinic, and last week while handling paperwork, I accidentally picked up a manila folder with my friend’s name on it. We grew up together, and though I know I shouldn't have looked, my eyes caught a page mentioning an opioid addiction diagnosis and a treatment plan. I was so shocked that I froze. I had absolutely no idea he was struggling, and all those nights he canceled on plans or seemed distant suddenly looked different. Now, every time I see him—at the gym, at dinner with the group—I feel like I’m holding this secret inside myself. I keep second-guessing every word I say, afraid to give away that I know this personal, difficult thing about him. Part of me feels like I could help; maybe he wants someone to reach out, to support him. But another part feels it would be an unforgivable betrayal to admit I saw his records. What if he feels violated, or worse, it destroys our friendship? I keep convincing myself to act normal, but I can barely sleep with all this guilt and confusion inside me. Am I doing more harm by staying silent, or would speaking up make things even worse for him—and for us? What would YOU do?
