I Accidentally Saw My Friend’s HIV Status—Should I Say Anything?

Category: health • Theme: Respecting Privacy vs Protecting Wellbeing

I’m still shaking as I type this. Last week, I went over to my friend’s place to help her set up her new laptop. She handed me her old USB drive to transfer some files. While copying documents, a folder popped up on the desktop. Out of habit, thinking it was part of her photos, I clicked—only to see scanned medical results. I closed it right away, but not before catching a bold ‘HIV Positive’ result, dated just a few months ago, with her name at the top. I’ve known her for years, and she’s never mentioned anything about her health. We share a tight-knit friend circle. My first reaction was guilt for seeing something so private. But now, I’m agonizing. She goes out drinking with us, sometimes hooks up with people we know (who probably don’t realize). Is it my place to ask if she’s told them? Or even if she’s getting treatment? And if not, do I have some responsibility to protect others? On the other hand, maybe I completely misunderstood, or she’s handling it all with her doctor and knows exactly what she’s doing. But what if she isn’t? Is it a betrayal if I stay silent, or if I confront her? I feel sick at the thought of losing her trust, or making her feel cornered. All I want is to do the right thing, but I honestly don’t know what that is in this situation. What would YOU do?
