I Discovered My Friend's Secret Diagnosis—Do I Speak Up?

Category: health • Theme: Privacy vs Concern for a Friend

I work as a receptionist at a private clinic, and last week, while sorting files, I accidentally opened a folder with my close friend's name on it. I shouldn’t have read any further, but the diagnosis was right there: my friend has been living with a chronic, possibly life-threatening condition for over a year. I was in total shock—I had no idea. We've known each other since college, and she’s always been the strong, reliable one for everyone, including me. Now that I know, little hints in her behavior suddenly make sense—canceled plans, tiredness, weird excuses. She’s never told me or our friend group anything about this. Ever since, I can't stop worrying about her. Part of me is just angry at myself for finding out this way, but part of me is scared she's trying to handle something huge alone. Should I gently let her know I know and offer support? Or should I wait and let her decide when (or if) she wants to share? There's also the ethical side: it wasn’t my business, and I don’t want to betray her trust. But can I really pretend I don't know? Every time I see her now, I feel horribly awkward and dishonest. What if something happens to her because she didn’t have the help she needed? I'm so torn between respecting her privacy and wanting to make sure she's okay. I keep going over every possible approach in my head and none of them feel right. What would YOU do?
