I work in a small medical clinic, mostly handling paperwork and filing. Last week, while sorting files late after hours, I accidentally came across my close friend's medical record. We're not supposed to read anything not related to our tasks, but I couldn't help noticing her name and the word 'opioids' on the paperwork. Out of curiosity and concern, I read a little more. She had been prescribed a high dose following an injury last year, but recently there were notes about possible dependence and withdrawal symptoms. Honestly, I was shocked—I had no idea she was struggling with anything like this. We've been friends since college, and I always thought I knew what was going on in her life. Ever since, I've felt completely torn. On one hand, I know I breached her privacy, and I shouldn't have seen that information at all. On the other, I am seriously worried for her safety and wellbeing—I've read stories about how quickly pain medication can become something far more dangerous. When we last met for coffee, she seemed tired and distracted, but I chalked it up to stress at work. Should I bring up what I found? That would mean admitting I saw her records, which could hurt our friendship and possibly get me in big trouble at work. But if I stay silent and something bad happens, I’m not sure I’ll forgive myself. I feel trapped between betraying her trust or abandoning her in a moment when she might need help more than ever. What would YOU do?
