I recently found out that my aunt’s cancer has come back, but she hasn’t told anyone else—not even her grown children or my other relatives. I only know because I accidentally opened a reminder for her oncology appointment while borrowing her phone to call for takeout. When I asked her about it, she broke down and admitted that after her last exhausting rounds of chemo, she decided not to try again. She begged me not to tell the family. She just wants a few peaceful months, focusing on her garden and her books, without everyone fussing over her or forcing her back into the hospital. I know how much her kids love her; they would do anything to get her to fight, and I suspect she could be convinced. But I also get why she’s tired—she’s lost so much weight, she can hardly get up in the morning, and she’s scared of spending her final days in pain. I want to honor her wishes, but I also feel responsible—if I say nothing, her kids will lose the chance to talk her into more treatment, or at least to say a real goodbye. I’ve never kept a secret this big. I feel torn apart between loyalty to her and my love for our family. What would YOU do?
