My Brother Is Hiding His Diabetes Crisis—Do I Step In?

Category: health • Theme: Respecting Autonomy vs Protecting Health

I just found out my younger brother, who’s lived with Type 1 diabetes since he was a teen, has secretly stopped taking his insulin regularly. He and I have always been close—even now, as adults with our own lives, we talk almost every day. But he only slipped up and told me after sounding really exhausted on a call. I started asking gentle questions, and eventually, he confessed he’s overwhelmed, depressed, and ‘tired of all the needles and numbers.’ He insisted I not tell our parents or anyone else, swearing me to secrecy. The thing is, I know this isn’t just a bad decision; it could actually kill him. I’m terrified every night, waiting for a text or call. But I also know he hates being treated like a child by our family, and I want to respect his wishes as an adult. Part of me wants to barge in and drag him to a doctor, or at least tell our parents so someone’s watching out for him. But what if that destroys the trust we have? What if I push him further away, and he just hides it better? I’m caught between my love for him as a sister and the fear I could lose him if I don’t act. What would YOU do?
