My Dad Is Secretly Refusing Chemo—Do I Step In?

Category: health • Theme: Respecting Autonomy vs Protecting Health

I recently found out that my dad, who was diagnosed with lymphoma last spring, has been quietly refusing his chemotherapy treatments for the past month. My mom had assumed he was still going, but I noticed when I drove him to an appointment that his clinic wristbands and prescription bottles were nowhere to be found. When I gently confronted him, he admitted he’s scared, exhausted, and just wants to try 'alternative' remedies at home. He begged me not to tell the rest of the family because he’s tired of being pushed into decisions he doesn’t want. But the rest of us only want what’s best and none of us can imagine losing him when there’s still a chance at remission. I feel torn: if I keep his secret, he might lose valuable time, but if I reveal this, I’ll break his trust and probably make him feel even more powerless. He trusts me, but I also feel responsible for his life. Watching my mom go on with hope in her eyes breaks my heart—and if she learns I knew all along, I worry she’ll never forgive me. What would YOU do?
