Should I Betray My Dad’s Secret to Save His Life?

Category: health • Theme: Personal Autonomy vs Duty to Protect

I recently found out that my dad has been secretly refusing the treatment his doctors say could save his life. He’s been hiding the unused medication at the back of his dresser and pretending to follow all of their instructions. I only discovered this when I was helping him pack for a short trip and found the boxes unopened. When I confronted him, he looked so exhausted and said, “Please, just let me decide how I want to live—or die.” It broke my heart. My sibling and mom have no idea. They just keep encouraging him to keep fighting, and my sibling even planned a big family celebration in the hopes that it would lift his spirits. Dad says he’s exhausted from side effects and just wants some peace. But the doctors are convinced this last round gives him a real shot. I feel intense pressure: If I say nothing, I might be letting my dad die when he could have more years. But if I go behind his back and tell my mom or his doctors, he’ll never trust me again—maybe he’ll feel betrayed, or even shut me out during the time we have left. I love him and want him around, but I keep hearing his voice telling me to respect his decision. No matter what I do, someone I love will get hurt or angry. I haven’t slept right in days. What would YOU do?
