I never thought I'd face this kind of decision. A couple weeks ago, I was helping a close friend clean up after a small get-together at his apartment. While taking out trash from his desk, a stack of papers slipped out from a folder and spilled across the floor. I quickly started gathering them up and realized too late that some were medical records. My eyes fell on a test result: the word "HIV positive" jumped out at me before I could look away. I instantly felt sick to my stomach—this is something my friend has never mentioned, and we've been close for years. After that night, I couldn't get it out of my head. He's healthy-acting, but I don't know if he's getting treatment, or if he’s ready to talk about it with anyone. I keep thinking about situations he could be in danger, or putting others at risk. But it's his private life, and I stumbled on something that wasn't meant for me. Every conversation since has felt heavy, and I worry about accidentally letting something slip. I want to support him, but I’m terrified of betraying his trust, or worse, making him feel exposed and judged. What would YOU do?
