Category: health • Theme: Respecting Autonomy vs Protecting a Loved One
I recently found out, purely by accident, that my dad has been secretly declining the chemotherapy his doctor recommended for his cancer. He’s told everyone—including my mom, my siblings, and our extended family—that he’s following his treatment plan. But last week, when I stopped by to deliver groceries, I overheard a tense call between him and his doctor, where he clearly refused the next round. Later, I checked the calendar on his kitchen table and saw that the hospital dates were crossed out. I confronted him privately, and he begged me not to say anything. He said the treatment makes him feel worse, not better, and he wants whatever time he has left to feel like himself. I’m torn apart—on one hand, I deeply respect his autonomy and right to choose, even if it scares me. On the other, the rest of our family deserves to know what’s really happening, and I worry that dad is shutting everyone out because he’s afraid we’ll pressure him. I feel complicit keeping this secret, but I also don’t want to betray his trust. Every time I see my mom fuss over his meals or my siblings talk about his future, I feel like I’m lying to all of them. If I step in, I might break his trust forever. If I do nothing, I might regret it for the rest of my life. What would YOU do?
