I never imagined I would find myself in a situation like this. Last week, I was helping a close friend organize some papers for her insurance claim after a recent car accident. While sorting files, I accidentally glanced at a medical report clearly labeled with her name. Out of curiosity and concern—because she's been acting off lately—I read a few lines. What I saw shocked me: her doctor had diagnosed her with stage 1 breast cancer several months ago. My friend has never once mentioned this to me or any of our mutual friends. She’s still drinking heavily at social events and skipping follow-up appointments (I noticed reminder letters in the stack). I feel guilty for looking, but now I can’t un-know this. Is she even seeking treatment? Does anyone else know? Part of me believes it’s her right to keep this private, and maybe she just isn’t ready to share. But I’m scared her silence and current self-destructive habits will make things worse. I don’t know if bringing it up would betray her trust or help her face something she’s avoiding. I’ve been so anxious just being around her, pretending I don’t know, but I don’t want to push her away either. What would YOU do?
