Should I Tell My Friend I Know His HIV Status?

Category: health • Theme: Protecting Privacy vs Preventing Harm

I work as an admin assistant at a local clinic. Last week, I was updating digital files when I accidentally pulled up my friend’s medical record instead of another patient’s. I only glanced enough to realize it was his, but I saw that he tested positive for HIV last month. I immediately closed out and felt sick to my stomach. My friend and I have been close since college—he’s always been outgoing but lately he’s seemed withdrawn. He hasn’t mentioned anything to me, nor has he told anyone else in our friend group, even his longtime girlfriend. I know confidentially is crucial, both for my job and for his dignity. At the same time, I’m honestly worried about his mental health and the risks—especially if his girlfriend doesn’t know. I’m terrified I’ll lose his trust or my job if I say anything, or that I might cause more harm by making assumptions. But if I stay quiet, am I leaving his girlfriend in the dark about something she deserves to know? I haven’t been able to sleep, torn up by fear and guilt. What would YOU do?
