Should I Tell My Friend I Saw Their Cancer Diagnosis?

Category: health • Theme: Honesty vs Respecting Privacy

I work part-time at a small clinic, and last Sunday, I was asked to help with some filing after hours, just to earn some extra cash. I was finishing up in the back office when I accidentally knocked over a stack of folders. In the rush to reorganize them, one file slid open—my friend's name was right on the top. Out of reflex, I glanced down and saw 'Stage II lymphoma, treatment plan enclosed.' I felt my stomach drop. My friend hasn’t mentioned anything about being sick—she still laughs at our Netflix nights and talks about her plans for the summer. Ever since, I can barely look her in the eye. She must have her reasons for keeping it private, and I know it’s not my information to know, let alone talk about. But I worry maybe she needs support and is too scared or proud to ask. A part of me feels guilty, like I’m betraying her by pretending I don’t know. Another part says it would be a huge invasion of her privacy to admit what I saw, and she might feel exposed and angry. Every text from her lately feels loaded. What if she’s waiting for the right moment to tell me? What if she wants to go through this alone? Or what if she truly needs someone, but can’t ask? I feel this pressure building, like I’m holding a secret I was never meant to have. I don’t want to lose her trust or cross a line I can’t uncross. What would YOU do?
