I start with the drawer because I was only looking for a screwdriver. Now. The desk still smells like his hand soap and printer ink. I find the stack of envelopes rubber-banded together, my name in his crooked block letters. All addressed. All stamped. All sealed. Eleven birthday cards written every year after my brother and I stopped talking. He died first. My brother is still in Akron, as far as I know. Then. I think it was still winter the first Wednesday, because he never took his coat off. Fifty-two consecutive Wednesdays, same routine. He would drop me at the door, say, "Text me if they call you back early," and go park. The infusion center parking lot where he ate his lunch alone in the car every Wednesday for a year. Bologna on white bread. The crinkle of the foil drove me crazy that one time I sat with him. The nurse once asked, "Does he ever miss a week?" I said no. She nodded and said, "He tells me he's fine." She clicked her pen twice. I remember that sound better than the IV beeping. Now again. Our daughter says we should mail the birthday cards to my brother. My sister says burn them, keep them as ours. I put them in my purse and went out to scrape ice off the grill lid. He wrote my brother's address from memory. Every year. What would YOU do?
