I was peeling blue painter’s tape off the kitchen doorframe when the realtor said, "Oh, you’re keeping those?" The pencil marks were still there, layered like tree rings. First day of kindergarten, middle school, senior year, all with dates I only half remember. We’re selling the house. I asked if we could take the doorframe. We cannot. My husband used to tap that frame every Wednesday before we left for chemo. Fifty-two Wednesdays, I think. Maybe more. He’d bump it with his knuckles like a player going onto a field. He never told me how scared he was. I heard from the nurse once, in the hallway, that he sat in the car in the infusion center parking lot and ate his sandwiches in silence. Turkey on wheat, always in the same grocery bag that crinkled. That last winter, when the snowbanks were higher than the bumper, he made me promise one thing. "If it goes bad, don’t let the kids come back here just to sit in these rooms," he said, staring at the microwave clock. "Let this place go." Yesterday, our son flew in anyway. He put his forehead against the doorframe, right where his name is. The realtor pretended to type something. I went upstairs and scrubbed the bathtub grout until my hands shook. Everyone keeps offering to help pack. I keep saying we’re fine. I still set out two coffee mugs on Wednesday mornings. I don’t know whose promise I’m keeping now. What would YOU do?
