I don't know why I'm posting this. I've never posted anything like this before. My husband and I had about fourteen years together before the crash on 183. I remember the orange traffic barrels more than the impact. Two years and four months now of being introduced to her own husband every morning. Our kids are both in high school. They call him Dad, and he believes them, even on the days he looks at me like I’m a neighbor. The hospital room that became a regular room that became home that became familiar enough has a tiny window that rattles when the freight trains go by. On the sill is a plastic fern I bought at Target, still with the $4.99 sticker on the bottom. He keeps a photo of our wedding by the bed. He reaches for it before he reaches for his phone. Every Sunday before the accident, we would go to my mom’s for her casserole. Mom's handwritten recipe card sat in her kitchen drawer, grease-stained, folded in thirds. She made that dish every Sunday for about twenty years. Three weeks after her funeral, I found the same card in our recipe box. Same fold lines. The ink is faded on one side from being opened so many times. On the back, in my husband’s handwriting, it says, "If I forget her, make this." He never told me. Now I don’t know whose last request I’m honoring. What would YOU do?
