He Forgot the Promise. Someone Else Remembered.

I found the note three weeks ago, folded behind my citizenship certificate frame when I dusted it. The same certificate I touch every time I walk past the living room wall, without really seeing it anymore. The note is on yellow legal paper, the top edge still rough. The handwriting leans left, like it’s trying not to be noticed. "If I forget," it says, "remind her I kept my promise. I’m sorry I won’t remember to say it. – M." There’s a date at the top. I think it was the year before the diagnosis, the year the heater broke on Thanksgiving. Underneath, in neat ballpoint, someone else has written my name and our address. No signature. Just a faint coffee ring. This morning, my husband sat at the same kitchen table where he sits every morning with his coffee, confused, while I made eggs and started again. "I’m sorry," he said, for knocking over the salt. Then, like he always does, he reached for my hand. His body remembers what his mind cannot. Twenty-two years after I arrived here, that citizenship certificate finally spelled my name right. He drove me home from Philadelphia, humming off-key hymns, repeating the judge’s words until he lost his voice. For three years, seven months of starting over every day, I thought I was carrying this alone. Now I’m holding this unsigned note. I really don’t know what he wanted me to do with it. What would YOU do?
