I thought the dog cake was for people. It was shaped like a sheet cake, but they said it was peanut butter and something crunchy, and only the dogs could have it. We were in a bright room at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center where everyone had plastic lanyards that clicked when they bumped together. My dad kept one hand on my shoulder and one hand on Daisy’s harness. I knew it had been ten years and eight months because they said it into the microphone. “From first harness to last.” Dad squeezed the handle once. Daisy just sat there with her vest on, like any other day. They talked about a judge and some papers from before I was born. Dad told me once that he didn’t know his name would change until the judge said it out loud. The adoption papers with his new legal name were in a folder then. Now they are folded in his wallet, next to a receipt for coffee that says $1.89. After the speeches, a trainer knelt and said Daisy could retire with us, even though Dad was getting a new dog. Dad didn’t say anything. He just pressed his forehead to Daisy’s. On the bus home he took the adoption papers out and made me read his name twice. I don’t know if that trainer knows what she gave us.
