I only learned about the marathon because of the box they handed me after the funeral. Inside, on top, was the marathon finisher medal, still on its ribbon, heavier than it looked. Under it, folded so neat it almost creased the air, was the train ticket with his name. I remember the envelope glue tasted like dust when I sealed it back up. Thirty-eight years and zero times he said the words. Thirty-eight years of his coffee waiting by the kitchen window where he left her coffee every morning at exactly the temperature she liked. I still reach for that spot first thing, like the mug might be there if I don't look directly. Later I found the note tucked under the medal. Just one line in the stiff handwriting he used for checks: "Ran this alone so you wouldn’t worry. Wore it home wishing you were there." I went outside and raked wet leaves into a pile until it was dark. I keep seeing him on that train, medal around his neck. He told no one he was running it. He wanted to see if he could without an audience. A woman across from him smiled; he started crying; he looked out the window. The box is still on the top shelf of our pantry.
