He Sat in the Back Row for Twenty-Two Years

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I used to count the chairs from the front of the auditorium so I could find him. Eleven from the aisle, three from the exit sign. Always the back row of the auditorium where he sat for every graduation, every play, every ceremony. I think I started counting in middle school, when the lights felt too bright. At home, her blue cardigan stayed on the back of the dining chair. Soft, slightly pilling at the elbows. She said the tile floor made her cold after dinner. Twenty-two years of back rows and no words. He never said he was proud. But he knew which side of the gym had better parking, which teacher always started late, which seat had a broken armrest. Last Christmas, or maybe the one before, she wore that cardigan at the table and kept rubbing the fabric between her fingers. The kimchi smelled stronger than usual. She said she was just tired. Now the cardigan is still on the chair, and I sit there instead. The fabric leaves little blue fuzz on my palms. After the funeral, strangers came up. They all knew her accomplishments. He had told everyone except her. I think I saw the signs before anyone else. The number of days I noticed and said nothing sits in my head like a phone number. I remember every day. I have never told anyone the count. What would YOU do?
