He Sat on the New Front Step and Counted

Category: heartwarming • Theme: ✨ Unexpected Kindness

I counted the cracks on the front step because it wasn’t the same step he left from. There were seven. The old house had three. Dad came home after eight years. I was six when he went in. Fourteen when he walked up the driveway outside Houston, carrying one plastic bag and looking like he wasn’t sure if he was on the right street. I had already folded the calendar from under my mattress into a square the size of a dollar bill. Every day was crossed off in red pen. The pen had run out twice. When Mom died, maybe half a year before he got out, I found her grocery list in her coat pocket. On the back of an envelope. Her handwriting was slanted and crowded. Milk. Bread. The cereal no one else in the house liked. The school counselor said I could tell my friends, but I only told her once and asked her not to say anything. I said we were fine. I said it a lot. Apparently we weren’t. The day he came home, there were three casseroles already in our fridge. A prepaid grocery card in the mailbox. The counselor standing on the sidewalk, pretending to check her phone. Her grocery list is still in my desk drawer. Now Dad keeps asking who we’re supposed to thank. I keep wondering if it’s supposed to be us who changes first. What would YOU do?
