I thought all grown-ups had keys to everything. I was nine when my uncle showed me the red maple in our front yard and said it would outlive us both. We had planted it the first spring after we moved in, when I was still too small to hold the shovel right. I remember the tag on the sapling was $39.99 and my mom frowned at the price. My uncle is the first one in our family to finish college, then med school. He says it took seventeen years from that garage to the emergency room on the same block. The garage is the parking garage on Wolfe Street where he slept for six weeks in the winter of 2006. He still parks in that garage. He has never told anyone why. Last month he didn’t come to my sister’s birthday. My mom kept checking her phone in the kitchen while the balloons sagged. Later I heard her say his name and "burnout" and "he won’t let me in" through the thin hallway wall. Yesterday we drove past our old house. The new owners have not cut down the red maple. It’s taller than the roof now. Tonight my mom stood outside his apartment door and knocked way too long. The door opened before she stopped. The maple is still there. I keep driving past that house alone. What would YOU do?
