I start with the couch. The fabric on the right side of the middle cushion is paler and softer. Same spot, same side, every evening for I guess twenty-three years. Now the indentation is gone because nobody sits there. Now. I stand in our Koreatown apartment, air smelling like kimchi and Pine-Sol. Her photo from high school graduation leans against the TV. I keep meaning to hang it, but the nail from the old calendar is still bent. Then. Back row of the auditorium again. Metal chair, a little wobble on the left side. Twenty-two years of back rows and no words. I clapped until my hands hurt and just said, "You hungry?" while other dads said longer things. At the funeral, strangers came up. Church ladies, the guy from the dry cleaners, her professor with the loud tie. They all knew her accomplishments. I had told everyone except her. One hour before the machines got quiet, I finally said it. In English first, then Korean, just in case. She could barely talk, but she squeezed my fingers and said, "Appa, I knew." Now people ask what we said. I just tell them we talked about hospital food. Sometimes I sit on the floor in front of the couch, not on it, and smooth the worn patch with my hand. Same spot. Same way she always folded her legs under her. What would YOU do?
