Her Last Letter, Their First Photo, and My Call

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I found the letter three days after the funeral, under the old tax folders in the hall closet. Her handwriting on the envelope, my name, our address outside Ann Arbor written a little crooked like she was tired. Fourteen months from diagnosis to this moment, give or take. I still hadn’t unpacked the casserole dishes. Inside was one sheet of printer paper and a small photo sleeve. The photo was of her parents, black and white, 1971, standing outside a door that doesn’t exist anymore. She told me once it was taken the year before the hard years started. They look young and sure and almost leaning into each other. It’s the only picture where they look the way they must have felt at the beginning. That photo sits on my dresser now, next to a sock with no match. Her letter was short. She wrote that she had recorded videos on the back porch where she recorded video messages for every milestone she would miss. She reminded me of the laptop folder and the password she texted me the week before the end. At the bottom, one line: "If you ever talk to my dad again, please tell him I kept this picture." Her dad hasn’t called in eleven years, I think. Maybe twelve. Last week, at Meijer, I bought a blank card with a blue bicycle on it. It’s been sitting on the kitchen counter ever since. What would YOU do?
