Her Last Request Was About the Refrigerator Drawing

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I never learned English well enough to say what I wanted. I can order at the nail supply store, talk to customers about square or round tips, but not about my son’s heart. At home, the words stay stuck. When he was four, he drew our family in crayon, stick figures under a sun with too many rays, and said, “This is us.” We taped it to the refrigerator that afternoon. I remember the tape folding on itself, like it did not want to let go. Now he is twenty-six. The drawing is still there, a little curled at the corners, taped at a slight angle. I have re-taped it three times. Once with the blue painter’s tape I bought for $3.79 at Home Depot, still on the counter. Twenty-eight years from arrival to this auditorium, I sit in Tulane’s rows where the robes are too long and the Latin is incomprehensible and I understand everything. My son stands on the stage, white coat stiff, hands shaking. I whisper, “Translate for me,” because that is what I always asked him to do. He starts the oath, then his voice catches. He cannot finish the English, just presses his lips together. Three weeks later, I find the folded program in his car, my name written over and over in the margin. His last wish was that I finally take down the drawing. What would YOU do?
