I found her sewing basket by the armchair when I came back for the first time in years. Wicker, with a little squeak in the lid hinge, still holding a half-finished square and a needle stuck in the yarn. I think it had been sitting there since before Christmas; there was a tiny candy cane wrapper under the chair leg. Growing up outside Huntsville, she sat in that spot most nights after closing at the Piggly Wiggly, sewing when the house finally went quiet. Sometimes she would look over the top of her glasses and ask, "You eat yet?" That was it. Then just the clock and the sound of the TV too low to make out the words. Eighteen years and four months of double shifts, laundry, and that basket at her feet. When Dad left, she brought home a stray beagle from the shelter. Said the dog needed us, but the dog followed her from room to room like it knew otherwise. On the nights I studied late, she'd fall asleep upright in that armchair, dog pressed against her leg, yarn pooled on the floor. By the time my aunt called from the hospital, we were two hours away. We drove through the night. When we walked in, the bed was already empty. Now the dog sleeps under that armchair. I sat in her driveway and held my house key with both hands.
