I found out about the boy from a letter in our mailbox last week. The envelope had no return address, just our street and my husband’s full name in a shaky blue pen. Inside, a woman wrote that her son was twenty now, in community college, alive "mostly because of your husband and the lunch he brought." I had to sit down on the kitchen chair where I used to count relapses. She said my husband packed an extra sandwich every morning for a quiet kid at the plant. Gave him rides home after the late shift. Talked him out of "doing something stupid" one night in the parking lot that smelled like burnt coffee and exhaust. I didn’t know about any of it. Back then, he packed his own lunch box before dawn, the same dented metal one and the thermos with the chipped red lid. Five years, four relapses, one morning that finally held. I think it was winter the first time I found him on the kitchen floor. I remember the tile felt colder than it should. I never told my mother how bad it got. I still haven’t. Now his lunch box is in the top cabinet, left side. I keep meaning to donate it. I keep not doing it. Sometimes I think I should reach out to that boy. Then I open the cabinet and just hold the thermos. What would YOU do?
