His Uniform Was Under Our Bed the Whole Time

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I raised my right hand in the courtroom at the Hennepin County Federal Building, front row left side, and swore the oath with my youngest daughter gripping my coat. Seventeen years, three months, eight days since we landed, they said. I just remember my legs shaking and the fluorescent lights humming. After, in our apartment, I slid his military uniform back into the box under the bed. Dress blues, pressed once after discharge, never again. I had found them when we were cleaning out the house, the week after my mother’s burial. The receipt taped inside said $24.17 for dry cleaning. He had put that uniform away the day he got out and never talked about what it held. I still do not know which war, only that the door opened before they stopped knocking that first week in America, when the recruiter came and talked about papers and speed. If he had missed that knock, maybe he would have stayed, maybe my mother would have seen this day. Her seat in the courtroom stayed empty, my scarf folded there. I went home and scrubbed the kitchen sink until my hands hurt. Now he asks, very softly, why I never told him how afraid I was all these years. I keep looking at that box and wondering if I should ask him, or let him keep it closed. I do not know what he wants me to do with his silence. I really do not know. What would YOU do?
