His Work Boots Are Still by My Door

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 🌱 Second Chances

I don't know why I'm posting this. I've never posted anything like this before. Seven years without contact, two years clean. Eleven years using, I think. Maybe twelve. I used to leave my steel‑toed work boots by the door every night, left one always unlaced at the top, because I was the first one out in the morning. Then I just stopped going out. Six months ago, my ex let me come by to grab some clothes before a halfway house. The boots were still there by the door. Dust on the toes, a Lego tire stuck under the heel. Nobody had moved them. I remember the hallway smelling like Pine‑Sol and old coffee. Last week, the family therapist in Tacoma called. My son wanted to see me. Not the other way around. The meeting would be at this community center, in a parking lot I used to cut through to buy. I was on the last flight in, last rental car off the lot. Hands shaking on I‑5. I sat in that parking space 27 minutes early and folded the same receipt until it tore. I almost drove away. My son walked up with his hood up and just asked, "You eat?" and handed me a cold burger. We sat on the curb, unwrapping food, saying almost nothing. EDIT: I noticed yesterday the boots are still by my ex's door in the background of a photo my son texted. I keep zooming in on them. What would YOU do?
