I Asked If We Could Take the Doorframe

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I found the note while packing the pantry, taped behind an old box of cornstarch that expired sometime in 2019. "If I don't make it, don't tell the kids I was scared. Tell them I was brave. And don't move those height marks. Promise me. - M." My husband never mentioned that note. He died between my sixth and seventh chemo, in a week that feels foggy, like the hospital hallway lights were dimmer. Now I am at MD Anderson, in the infusion room hallway where the bell hangs on the wall outside Room 4. Fourteen months, forty-two infusion sessions. I ring the bell with my good arm while the kids clap, and the metal sound is thinner than I thought it would be. After, my sister sends a video to our group chat. "Dad would be so proud," my son says in the background. No one knows about the note. They all think he was the brave one. At home, the realtor says we cannot take the kitchen doorframe. The pencil marks with their names and dates climb in uneven lines, all the way to the smudge where he measured me after my first chemo. That night I wiped the microwave until 1:20 a.m. Tomorrow, I could tell them about the note. Or I could just keep tracing those pencil lines with my thumb. Every time we walk past. Until the doorframe is gone. What would YOU do?
