I Came Home After Three Years. They Didn’t Know Me.

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 🐾 Animal Love

I smell them before I see them. Now. The parking lot stones press into my paws. The same shelter. The same metal door. The air tastes like cold rain and bleach and the faint sugar of a donut someone dropped near the curb. Then. I think it was still warm the day they first carried me out. The boy’s shoelaces were two different colors. The girl’s hair smelled like apples. Their car door opened and the inside smelled like crackers and crayons and something that became home. Three years, two months, and nineteen days missing. Now again. The shelter worker’s hand is gentle on my collar. Her voice shakes when she calls the number on the old tag. I only understand one word. “Found.” Then. Every birthday, every first day of school, they stood against the kitchen doorframe. Pencil marks up the wood, each with a date and a name. I watched from the tile, tail on their toes, while they laughed at how tall they were. Now. The car that pulls in is theirs, but not. The boy is longer, the girl’s voice lower. Their eyes look past me at first. I walk to their car before they call me. Later, in the empty kitchen, the doorframe is bare and quiet. I don’t know what they wanted me to do with being found this late. That’s the part I keep circling around the house for. What would YOU do?
