I keep my husband’s Timex on the kitchen windowsill now, next to the rubber band jar. I wind it every Sunday after church, thumb on the smooth glass, like always. It still runs. Last month, after my daughter’s service, I opened the shoebox the hospice nurse handed me. Inside were letters. All addressed to my grandchildren. All of them unsent. The top one started, “Mama was supposed to be there.” Somewhere around the third page, my own name showed up. She wrote that I had given up my plan to move near my sister in Florida to raise them. Twelve years, she wrote. She said I never once made them feel like a burden. She apologized for not being the one on the front porch swing. I don’t remember the date she wrote that first letter. I just remember the pages smelled faintly like lemon cleaner, like the hospice room. I read every letter twice, then went home and scrubbed the fridge shelves until my knees ached. My grandchildren are grown now. College brochures on the table, car keys jingling, laughing in the hallway. They never knew about the condo I almost bought with the green carpet.
