I Found His Old Voicemail Before My Graduation Walk

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I was standing behind the curtain of the gymnasium stage where the folding chairs creak and the lighting is too bright when I heard the old ringtone. It came from my coat pocket. I still had my coat even though I think it was already warm outside. My grandson had set my phone to shuffle through saved sounds for “good luck.” He didn’t know one of them was the last voicemail my husband left, back when I first said I might try school again. Forty-three years between the first attempt and this one. Every Sunday for eleven years, we sat on the third bench from the fountain, slightly tilted to the right, and he’d say, “When you walk that stage, I’ll whistle so loud they’ll think it’s the fire alarm.” He never got to whistle. The day before he passed, I called from that same bench and told him I had filled out the community college application. I didn’t know then that his voice on my voicemail would be the last time I heard him say my name. Yesterday, I went back in February. I sat on that bench. Two strangers sat on the other end. Neither of them knew. Now I’ve found the old voicemail, buried in my phone, still clear as if he’s in the next room. What would YOU do?
