I Found Mom’s Shoebox After Dad Forgot Her

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I counted forty-seven coffee rings on the table before Grandpa noticed me. He was staring at Grandma like she was a stranger. Same kitchen table, same chipped rooster salt shaker, same mug that says “World’s Okayest Husband.” He asked her name again. She just slid a plate of toast toward him and said, “We can start with breakfast.” I’m their oldest grandchild. I was only in Lancaster County for a long weekend, I think. Mom said it’s been three years, seven months of starting over every day, but Grandma just said, “Mornings are our first dates now.” When he went to the bathroom, she reached for his empty chair like he was still there. Then she buttered his toast all the way to the edges. No one talked. Later, looking for extra blankets, I opened the hall closet and found a shoebox. Inside were letters she wrote but never mailed, unsealed envelopes, some addressed, some blank. I knew she used to write when she couldn’t say things out loud; Mom told me that once, in the car, when gas was $2.89. Some letters were to me. I read two. I stopped. Then I went downstairs and scrubbed the sink until the metal smelled like lemons. That night he fell asleep on the couch holding her hand. His body remembered what his mind could not. Now I’m the only one who knows about the letters. What would YOU do?
