I found the photo while sorting her purse for donations, the week after the funeral. Wallet-size, school-picture kind, with the cloudy blue background and my bowl cut. The corner was softened into a curve, like it had been thumbed a thousand times. I remembered when she first put that photo in there. I think it was the fall I started kindergarten, because my jacket still smelled like the school bus vinyl. She had slid it behind her driver's license and said, "There you are. Now you're always with me," and then asked if I wanted more syrup on my waffles. Now I am twenty-eight, and she is gone, and the photo is still in the same slot. Under the wallet, in the box from the lawyer, was the file. My adoption records, non-identifying notes, and, at the bottom, a rubber-banded stack of letters I had never seen. All from my biological mother. Five years ago, my mom left that same file on the kitchen counter and said nothing. I spent the whole afternoon wiping down the fridge instead of opening it. The letters are postmarked over decades. Minneapolis, Duluth, somewhere in Iowa I cannot remember now. The top one says my name and "For her, when she is ready" in a looping hand that looks like mine. The photo is still in her wallet. I put the wallet back in the drawer by the stove and closed it.
