I think the last ordinary moment was him complaining about the price of sweet corn at the Piggly Wiggly. He set my coffee on the sill by the kitchen window, the way he always did, handle turned just right. I remember the cup was chipped near the lip. He grunted something about the weather and the soybeans, shrugged into his jacket, and the door banged once. He never came back from town. Thirty-eight years and zero times he said the words. But the driveway was always plowed first, my gas tank never dropped under half, the washer never broke for more than a day. I used to joke to my oncology patients that some people say it with roses, some people say it with oil changes. Back then, I rang the brass COURAGE bell for them, when their hands shook too much. I knew the way families watched the bell instead of the faces. Now it is my turn, years after the funeral, and the bell is the same one. When I finish chemo, they tell me to ring it. The sound is flatter than I expected. I keep my hand on the rope longer than anyone else. Last month, our son mailed a box he found in the barn. Inside are cards, thirty-eight of them, one for each anniversary, never given. I thought the silence was only pointed at me. Now I wonder who he was trying to forgive. What would YOU do?
