I remember the last ordinary morning before I ran too far. She was humming in the kitchen, barefoot on the tile, scooping sugar with the chipped blue mug. The kids were arguing about a field trip. The radio was half-static. She slid a slice of toast down to my bowl, crust first, and set a mason jar of her homemade jam on the counter like always. That summer, boxes of those jars lined the hallway. She sent a case home every year from her parents’ garden. The handwriting on the labels never matched, like her hand forgot its own shape. I slipped out the gate that afternoon. I thought I would come right back. Three years, two months, and nineteen days missing. At least that is what they said when they found me forty miles away. I only remember rain on metal and a man’s shoes that squeaked. The shelter in Fairfax County smelled the same as the first time they chose me. Dust, cleaner, and a little like popcorn. I knew the sound of their car door before anyone said their names. I walked to their car before they called me. Now, the last jar of her jam sits in the back of the pantry. The date on it is three summers ago. No one opens it, and no one throws it out. I still press my nose to that door. I still don’t know who I came back for. What would YOU do?
