I don't know why I'm posting this. I've never posted anything like this before. Three years, two months, and nineteen days after our dog Daisy slipped out during a storm, the shelter in Fairfax County called. Same shelter where we first met her. Same parking lot. I was in the grocery store staring at the price tag on a jar of pickles, $4.89, when my phone buzzed. They said she was thinner, older, found forty miles away. I drove there alone. My husband was at work, the kids were at college, and I told everyone I could handle it. In the lobby, I recognized the quilt she made by hand before she died. My mom. Eight winters of tiny stitches, cotton patches from old shirts and worn-out clothes. The shelter worker was sitting on the floor with Daisy, and that quilt was under her paws like it had always been hers. The worker said, "You brought this when you adopted her, remember? You said it would smell like home." I had forgotten that. She hadn’t. She kept it all these years, washed it, folded it, waited. Now I sleep under that same quilt every night. I recognize every piece. EDIT: I found a saved voicemail from my mom. It’s twelve seconds long. She’s just asking if the quilt is holding up in the wash. What would YOU do?
