My Family Found Me Again, But I Stayed Back

Category: heartwarming • Theme: ⏳ Too Late

I know the end first. Three years, two months, and nineteen days after I slipped through a loose board, I was back in the parking lot of the same shelter where they first carried me out, eight years ago. The air smelled like wet concrete and french fries from somewhere nearby. My hips ached when I sat. A woman from the shelter knelt, held up a rectangle that glowed. My face, and the boy’s face, together. The last photo taken together, a little blurry from smoke and sunlight at a backyard cookout. I remember hot dogs, a paper plate bending under too much potato salad, someone arguing about the right way to grill corn. In the picture, the boy was smaller, his arm around my neck. My tongue was out. We were both halfway to a laugh nobody thought to finish. No one knew that would be the last one. The woman said the boy had written a letter. It showed up three days after his funeral. She didn’t read it to me, but she put my head against her chest and stayed quiet. Later, when my family’s car pulled in, I walked to it before they called my name. Then I turned and drank from the metal bowl instead. I still don’t know if staying back keeps them whole or just keeps me away. Three years gone and I still don’t know. What would YOU do?
